The most commonly known locale that people connect with the Cherokee Indians are the states of North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. However, before they settled in the Southeastern United States, it is believed that they came from the Great Lakes area where the Iroquois lived. Like in so many other parts of the world, the original forms of jewelry made by the Cherokee involved beads, shells, and nuts; and with the invention of metals, copper, gold and silver became another source material to make jewelry. Learn All About Diamonds - the Treasure of Fine Jewelry

The secret to winning a woman’s heart, diamonds have an aura of admiration, inspiration and awe.

The first step in any treatise on diamonds is to establish that there are two types of diamonds: natural diamonds and synthetic diamonds. First we'll focus on natural diamonds.

NATURAL DIAMONDS

Diamonds consist of carbon atoms that bond together under extreme pressure and temperature as deep as 87 to 120 miles below the Earth’s crust. Just one carat of diamond, or a unit stone weight of 200 milligrams is made up of billions of such atoms that take between 1- 3 billion years to grow. Under the right conditions, that is. It could also be that diamonds stop forming when conditions change unfavorably, and then pick up where they left off and continue to grow when carbon atoms are available and temperature and pressure are right.

Over time, volcanic eruptions and other shifts in the Earth’s crust transport the diamonds from their depths within the Earth to the surface where man can then mine them from the cooled magma (or kimberlite) that they are buried within. Such volcanic eruptions must be sufficiently violent and fast for the diamonds to survive. If the travel to the surface of the earth happens too slowly, the diamonds could transform into graphite.

Diamond is the hardest and toughest material known to man, it’s name originating from the Greek language and meaning “unbreakable”. The hardness refers to the resistance to scratches. Toughness refers to the resistance to breakage due to impact. Diamond also has high thermal conductivity, which means it is efficient at carrying or conducting heat.

After diamonds are mined, they need to be cut. Though diamonds are very hard, they are also brittle, so they can be broken. However, doing so requires talent that needs to be mastered, as simply breaking the diamond apart is not the goal. If the diamond is to be used for diamond jewelry, the challenge is to break it apart at the precise angle and place to bring out the best facets of the diamond and also to cut away any defects or impurities.

Once cut, the diamond is repeatedly polished to remove extraneous material and eventually bring about the desired shape as well. If any defects remain in the final diamond product, additional polishing or laser drilling either removes them, or they may sometimes be filled. Placing the diamond strategically in a piece of jewelry so the flaw is not visible is also a common practice.

One may occasionally notice diamond jewelry where the diamond may be colored. These colors in the diamonds are in fact a result of defects or impurities. Boron and nitrogen are two of a very select few minerals that can penetrate the tight weave of diamond atoms. Boron results in a bluish color in the diamond and nitrogen causes a yellow. Other impurities or defects in the atom structure can bring about the colors of brown, red, pink, purple or orange.

Diamonds are very popular for jewelry because of their durability. Since it is the hardest material, only another diamond can scratch a diamond. Diamond jewelry therefore resists daily wear and tear very easily and maintains its polish and condition even if worn every day. Other uses of diamond include kitchen knives, hand tools such as grinding stones, industrial abrasives applications of different forms and purposes, as well as in the semiconductor industry.

Annually, about 57,000 pounds of diamonds are mined worldwide. The majority of the world’s diamonds come from Central and South Africa, though Australia, India, Russia, Brazil and Canada have plenty of diamond resources as well.

Diamonds have been subject of much controversy due to human abuse of miners and child work by armed groups in Africa that finance their operations with the sale and distribution of diamonds. The term blood diamonds is well known now especially after a popular movie with same title about exactly this issue. To curb the distribution of blood diamonds, the United Nations and the diamond industry established a certification program called the Kimberly Process. According to the United Nations Department of Public Information, it seems to be working: "Hailing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme as 'too important to fail', delegates in the General Assembly [of the United Nations] today [December 20, 2011] praised the Process for having significantly reduced the scope of the conflict diamond trade…”

SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS

Synthetic diamonds are created in the lab either through a process that simulates the high pressure and high temperature under which natural diamonds develop (HPHT), or through a process called chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Though natural diamonds are considered to be hardest material, some lab-created diamonds actually exceed natural diamonds in terms of hardness, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity.

The HPHT process simulates the conditions in the Earth using very high pressures to grow diamonds. Contrary to the HPHT method, CVP uses low pressure to create diamonds. Carbon atoms are mixed with carbon-containing gas, such as methane and hydrogen in a grow chamber. Heat is then applied to this mix, which sets off a chemical reaction that makes the carbon form into the dense structure of a diamond, the same as natural diamonds. By manipulating the amount of gases, as well as the mixture of carbon atoms and the temperature, different types of synthetic diamonds can be grown.

One major advantage of CVD diamonds is that they can be produced onto large areas of other substances. The thermal and electrical conductivity are characteristics crucial to many industrial items especially in electronics. Hence, synthetic CVD diamonds have found a wide range of commercial and industrial applications and are commonly used for high voltage switches, optics, transistors and semi-conductors. The hardness of the synthetic diamonds also makes them a preferred material for cutting tools such as grinding wheels and saws and other abrasive tools for polishing and other applications.

Synthetic diamonds can also be grown in different colors such as clear, white, blue, green or orange, etc. This is accomplished in the same fashion that nature does it: mix in boron and nitrogen, and the diamond assumes a respective color. Even in the jewelry industry, synthetic diamonds are now commonly used for earrings, pendants, rings, and other jewelry items. Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is actually the only “synthetic diamond” that doesn’t consist of carbon, and instead is made of zirconium dioxide. A good example of how closely cubic zirconia resembles natural diamond can be see in the photo at right of Landstroms very popular Black Hills Gold cubic zirconia necklace. Other stones which are commonly referred to as types of “synthetic diamond” are Moissanite and White Sapphire. In essence, any natural diamond can be reproduced synthetically.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

Because of the beauty and strength of diamonds, for centuries they've been used to symbolize the lasting tradition of marriage, eternal love and commitment. Though the vast majority of wedding jewelry is comprised of natural diamonds, they are indeed very expensive due to the limited supply as a natural resource as well as the extent and efforts to refine it to the final product. Synthetic diamonds are much easier and faster to produce and are therefore much less expensive. Consider that a natural diamond takes billions of years to grow. Synthetic diamonds are made within a couple of days.

There is a high concern within the jewelry business that synthetic gemstones may actually be marketed as natural diamonds. How do you discern a natural diamond from a synthetic diamond? A special device using the technology of spectroscopy was developed to differentiate between the two types of diamonds. Unless otherwise identified as cubic zirconia, etc., Landstroms only uses genuine conflict-free diamonds in all of their Black Hills Gold and silver wedding jewelry, Mothers jewelry and other diamond creations.

For the end user there may not be such a difference between natural and synthetic diamonds. Except, of course, for those that insist on the natural type, it is important. In terms of looks, the layperson’s eye likely cannot distinguish one from the other, though it is said that synthetic gemstones such as CZ are less flawed, clearer and look purer. However, some say it sometimes makes the stone look artificial.

We sometimes take simple things for granted, like the purpose of jewelry, for example.

EARLY JEWELRY DESIGNS

The simplest function of jewelry is its use as a buckle on belts or straps. Similarly, brooches and pins have been serving to hold garments closed for thousands of years. Building on these simple functionalities, the design of buckles and brooches evolved to include the aspect of being decorative, which in itself is the most popular function of jewelry today.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF JEWELRY

Many cultures also used jewelry to signify their social status and wealth, such as in India’s caste system where only the higher castes are allowed to wear jewelry. But across many other cultures elaborate jewelry and ornaments worn on clothing and body indicated ones wealth.

As much as jewelry can express social ranking, it also serves to convey affiliations to groups, or in the larger sense the commitment to matrimony, such as signified by the wedding band. Crosses display the belonging to a specific religion. Elaborate ornaments and symbolic pieces of jewelry are also worn to signify the affiliation with a guild, a brotherhood or fraternity. A good example of this is the Mason ring. This is quite a common function of jewelry still nowadays, in the United States and many other modern societies.

Elaborate chains and ornaments have been utilized to embody authority, a political role or duty, or the holding a public office. These uses were extremely significant in ancient and medieval times, but are still common in the modern world from a simple policeman’s badge to Great Britain's traditional Queen’s Guards, Sentry of the Grenadier Guards, and judges in court.

JEWELRY AS A TALISMAN

Another function of jewelry is to protect the wearer from evil, misfortune or sickness. More common in Eastern and African cultures, this can also be found less widespread in Western societies: Feng Shui followers wear crystals to attract good energy or calmness, and beads for good health. For the Celts, the clover symbolizes good luck.

Hopi Jewelry, also made in America

Like Landstroms Black Hills Gold, Hopi Jewelry is also made in America, but exclusively by native American Hopi Indians.

WHO ARE THE HOPI INDIANS?

The Hopi are an Indian nation that now lives on an Indian reservation in northeastern Arizona. Hopi means “The Peaceful Ones”. Their population is approximately 10,000 (census results are not conclusive), and they live in twelve traditional villages on several mesas, surrounded by the Navajo reservations. The Hopi’s ancestry is the Anasazi who traditionally lived in the Four Corners area of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

Though the Hopi are well known for their pottery, baskets, textiles and beadwork, Hopi jewelry has gained a lot of popularity throughout the 20th century. Originally, Hopi jewelry was made of turquoise, shells, stones, wood and seeds; these are the traditional materials used for Hopi since ancient times by nations across the entire globe.

THE ORIGIN OF HOPI JEWELRY

With the invasion of the Spanish and their insurgence into the Southwest, the Indians of the area learned how to work with metals, in particular silver-smithing. Until World War II, silver work was either cast or stamped. In the 1940s, the Hopi developed a method of silver “overlay” which, as the word indicates, involves placing one layer of silver on top of another.

This technology gained more widespread application when veterans returned from the Second World War and they enrolled into smithing classes that were sponsored by the government. The Hopi during that time developed and refined the process of silver overlay. In 1949, the Hopi Cooperative Guild was founded, which also offered training and tools and by doing so promoted the artwork and advancement of the overlay technology.

WHAT IS SILVER OVERLAY?

The process involves using sheets of silver. Most jewelry items of value are made of sterling silver, which consists of 92.5% pure silver that is blended with other metals to give it a firmer structure. This allows the material to be formed and cast into specific shapes, and cut with the many designs that are now created by a huge variety of traditional and modern jewelry makers.

In the case of the Hopi’s silver overlay technology, two sheets of silver are implemented. A design is created on one of the sheets of silver and then cut out by hand with a saw. This is called the “negative” layer. This layer is then soldered onto another sheet of silver that is textured with a hammer, chisel or punch. The two sheets are then assembled, cut into final shape and then oxidized with a layer of silver, which brings out the negative areas of the design as the black patterns that the Hopi jewelry is so well known for. Jewelry is one of the oldest man-made objects in the world.

A few years ago, jewelry made from sea shells coated with clay was found in eastern Morocco, located in northern Africa. It is believed these items date back 82,000 years! Other discoveries in both the Middle East and across Africa have also uncovered similar jewelry from the same time span, though estimations of exactly how old these items are vary across the scientific world. In ancient times jewelry was primarily made of shells, bone (tusks, teeth), stone and berries. With the discovery of metals and the process of smelting several thousand years ago, jewelry made of copper and gold became very popular.

EVOLUTION OF JEWELRY MATERIALS

Ever since, the materials used for jewelry have expanded to include diamonds and other gemstones and metal alloys such as bronze, platinum, and titanium. Over the course of history, the traditional materials like animal parts, stone and wood remained a valuable source for a wide variety of jewelry which served various functions such as status symbols, decorations and for use in celebrations and rituals. A June Bride's Story

A bride's most lucky month is fast approaching!

June is the most popular month for weddings - when every woman's dream of walking down the aisle, wearing the best gown, holding a lush bouquet of flowers and getting ready for her eternal vow with the one she truly loves most often takes place.

This is Jenny's story. Like most women, Jenny had since her childhood dreamed of her wedding day. Dressed in a beautiful gown of white and gold, as she had seen before in romantic movies, she had visualized her dream wedding many times before - but the guy was always just a blur. Through the years, she endured several relationships, some short term and some which lasted years but then she met James, who was just perfect for her. After a while, they both decided to settle down for good. When James proposed, Jenny's wedding day dreams as a little girl began to turn into reality.

She wanted her wedding to be the best, and perfect in every detail. Of course, they had both already planned on the best month for their wedding, June. Getting married in June is popular for a number of reasons, but it's also considered to be lucky. She had chosen the best gown as she had dreamed before in white and gold, which well-suited the motif of the same colors. James had chosen the best for himself, as well, wanting it all to be perfect for Jenny. Both of them had agreed on a church, planned for the reception, and suggested clothes for both of their parents and invited friends.

Likely, no time soon. In fact the price of silver has recently begun to soar as well. With the rapidly developing world and the continuing increase in population, the costs of all commodities and natural resources are at all time highs. And with the economic stresses of the past couple of years and the likelihood of rising worldwide inflation, the rising price of precious metals is certain to continue for some time to come before flattening out.

That said, you may have also noticed on our website that increased prices for Landstroms Black Hills Gold jewelry went into effect on December 30th. Regrettably, we had no other choice but to make these changes. It's been over six months since Landstrom's last price increase on June 7th, 2010 and gold and silver have been on a steady incline ever since.

Since it takes approximately eight days for Landstroms to build anything not in stock, there's no time left to ship and receive by Christmas unless your item is IN-STOCK.

If your item is not in stock and you cannot select an alternate, a popular thing many of our customers do is to print off a photo of your gift from the item's product page and include it with a card indicating that their gift is being hand-made for them and they will be receiving it soon. Just right-click on the item's photo and choose "Save Target As" and select where you want to save the photo. Then you can print it.

This usually meant you had to click, click, click....

... until now!

There is a retail catalog in the works for the future, but it will only include

With Gold currently trading near 18-month highs, Landstroms has announced that they will raise prices across the board on their entire line of jewelry effective October 12, 2009. Landstroms has been doing their best to keep prices low, but since a large percentage of Landstroms' pieces are comprised of gold, it's simply unavoidable that their jewelry prices will increase as gold rises. Expect increases of between 5 and 10% on most gold pieces, depending on their individual gold content. Now, once you have set up Google Reader, you
simply copy the RSS address of the site you would
like to subscribe to, go to your Google Reader page,
click "Add Subscription" and paste the address in
the box. That's it! Google Reader will show you a
list of entries from the blog, forum or podcast you've
subscribed to.

How do you find the RSS address of the site you
want to subscribe to? Easy! Usually there's a link
or a button on the blog page that says "RSS" or
"Subscribe to our feed" or you may just see the
following symbol:

Simply click one of these links and your browser
will open a page with the RSS Address, and often
even provide you with click-able buttons to add
directly to your favorite reader, whether it's Google
Reader, My AOL, My Yahoo!, My MSN, etc.

You can get started by adding our RSS Address to
your favorite reader today:
